We’ve reached that magical time of the year where it becomes clear that there’s going to be some serious competition for the “best” smartphone out there. If you’re on Big Red, there’s no shortage of fancy gadgets headed your way. This article will cover the best upcoming phones on Verizon, some of which we know for sure are coming while some of still more rumor than fact at this point.

Motorola X phone

Motorola X Phone

Remember Droid? Then you’ll know that Motorola and Verizon Wireless have been as thick as thieves for the last few years. It’s expected that this mystery upcoming phone from Google’s mobile hardware division is going to make some waves.

The name “X Phone” has been floating around forums for a little while now, adding an air of mystery to a smartphone that has very little in the way of confirmed details. While many believe that this phone is slated for announcement at Google I/O, the company recently slipped up and posted a hiring ad on their LinkedIn profile for a project manager on the “X” project. If the company is just now looking for a PM, it’s hard to imagine that the phone is right around the corner.

Whether this phone is a few weeks months away, Motorola will be looking to Verizon Wireless in the hopes that the X will be its new flagship phone. Maybe they will find a way to get the phone in users hands without that pesky Droid branding.

Upcoming Verizon Phones - Nokia Lumia Laser

Nokia Lumia 920 Laser

Microsoft and Verizon have had an awkward relationship ever since their users rose up as one and demanded that Bing be removed from their Android phones. There’s not been a successful Windows Phone on Verizon since long before the Kin and Kin 2, but Nokia is looking to change that with an upcoming special edition of their Lumia flagship.

After the exclusivity period with AT&T ends in the US, you can expect the Lumia 920 Laser to hit the shelves at Verizon Wireless stores. It’s not expected that there will be any difference in specs when compared to the AT&T variant of the Lumia 920, but the phone will come pre-loaded with Verizon exclusives on Windows Phone. The Data Sense tool, NFL app, and Verizon’s own navigation and backup apps will make for a compelling reason to grab Nokia’s latest handset.

Nokia will be competing directly with the thinner, faster HTC 8X on Verizon Wireless, and its more than likely that competition will come down to pricing and available extras. Nokia came out of the gate at the Lumia launch with no shortage of accessories, including an NFC pairing speaker that is typically available separately.

Upcoming Verizon Phones - Galaxy S4 (render)

Samsung Galaxy S4

It feels like we’ve been talking about the Galaxy S4 since the day after the release of the Galaxy S3, and that’s probably because that’s exactly what has been going on. Samsung has, to a large extent, taken over the Android ecosystem and the Galaxy line of smartphones exists as the most popular handset for the last two years. As the only real competitor to Apple’s iPhone when it comes to sales, there is plenty of excitement over the upcoming successor to the S3.

Samsung is expected to deliver a 1080p screen with a quad-core processor and the best battery life you can get with an LTE radio onboard. The Galaxy S3 on Verizon Wireless was seen as somewhat diminished when compared to the European version of phone last year, as it was necessary to use a dual-core processor to support the US desire for LTE. That won’t be an issue this year, and undoubtedly the Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4 will be a powerful force to compete with throughout 2013.
